I've heard people talk about how they think Jackson Pollock's work is based on math or that each painting may even be an entire math equation.  I don't think I agree with this, but it is interesting to read about.  Here are a couple of articles:

Tara, I just read the articles on Pollock and found your post really interesting. While I may consent to the authors' points of view that Jackson Pollock's paintings were composed of fractals, I have to say I doubt it was intentional. I'm willing to bet that his paintings are similar to the Escher's work in that they may have significant amounts of math in them, but I doubt they spent their time while painting them thinking about equations. Thanks for the interesting info.

yah, i think it's kind of like the way everything around you can be broken down into mathematical terms if you want to think that way... trees for instance have fractal patterns but maybe the trees aren't thinking about math... i think that what Pollack was doing was making a visual map of his movement- trying to represent energy in a static painting. The flow of his movements across the canvas were likely unconscious patterns that can be viewed as painted fractals.
